|The "Golden October" Joint Opera Concert of Central Conservatory of Music and Toronto School of Music Held in Canada|
|at Toronto Centre for the Arts|
After two days hard work rehearsals, the "Golden October" Joint Opera Concert of Central Conservatory of Music and Toronto School of Music was held in Toronto Centre for the Arts in the evening of October 14th, 2017. At the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the founding of Canada, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau sent a congratulatory note to the "Golden October Concert." In the letter, he thanked the musicians from China and Canada for sharing their artistry with Canadian community. Before the concert, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Toronto City Councillor, Han Ning, the Head of Cultural Office of the Consulate General of P. R. China in Toronto, and Colin Yip, the President of International Music & Dance Association in Canada and the President of Toronto School of Music, warmly welcomed Professor Guo Shuzhen and the teachers and students of Central Conservatory Opera Centre. They highly praised the contribution that Central Conservatory of Music made for the cultural and artistic communication between China and Canada. Professor Guo Shuzhen, on behalf of the President of CCOM Yu Feng, expressed his thanks to Toronto School of Music and gave CCOM souvenirs as a gift.
Although the evening was cold in the late autumn in Canada, over thousand seats were occupied in Toronto Centre for the Arts in the concert. Accompanied by the Distinguish Professor of CCOM Marco Bellei and the teacher of CCOM Xu Weiwei, in the first half of the concert, students of CCOM and TSM performed Chinese songs and arias of operas that presented beautiful voice and wonderful singing skills and well received from the audiences; in the second half of the concert, they performed the one-act lyric opera Lolanta by Pyotr Tchaikovsky (total nine scenes). It was the last opera composed by Tchaikovsky which is called a pure fairy tale opera. The opera has beautiful melodies, clear structure, fanciful story and a happily ending which is rare in Tchaikovsky's operas. Because of historical reasons, there are many Russian immigrants live in Toronto. However, it is still infrequent for them to listen to an original Russian opera. Instructed by Professors Guo Shuzhen, Ma Honghai and Bei Baoyi, the students were well-received from the audiences with their fluent language, accurate and subtle artistry and rich stage performance.
The well-renowned Italian conductor Leonardo Guadrini appreciated the complete cooperation between the teachers and students of Central Conservatory Opera Centre and the Orchestra of Toronto School of Music in such a short period of time. Although the rehearsing time was quite tight, the young Chinese vocalists assured the audiences a wonderful performance of this concert with their graceful singing, mature stage performance and hard work during the rehearsal. Their performance touched the President of TSM Colin Yip. As the Closing Concert of "Canada - China Music Festival," Canadian media reported that the concert "brought us Chinese mainstream culture which is the pride of Chinese people." The teachers and students of CCOM and TSM had significant academic communication and established profound friendship.
The short three-day visit and performance in Canada would be completed soon, the teachers and students of CCOM Opera Centre would continue their performing tour in the United States. The aim of the tour is to stick to the national cultural strategy of "going out" of Chinese culture, and to fully display the achievements of China's higher education of music.
Looking forward to the success of the American tour!
